Building Capacity for Community-Centered Development

Capacity building, community stewardship, and project expertise for stronger development outcomes. 

Revitalized Communities helps public agencies determine where ALIGN fits within their development practice, prepare staff to use it, and provide support as it is applied. Through Community Prosperity Institute, ALIGN also builds community capacity for long-term stewardship, helping development benefits continue beyond the project itself.

ALIGN Training and Municipal Capacity Building

Build the Capacity to Make Community-Centered Development Part of the Work. ALIGN provides a practical framework for integrating community priorities with agency goals and development realities. Revitalized Communities works with agency leadership and staff to build the knowledge, structure, and capacity to use ALIGN within their development practice.

A focused leadership working session examining how development is currently carried out and where ALIGN can strengthen existing policy, procedures, and practice.

The session explores how ALIGN can be incorporated broadly across development, applied to defined project types or circumstances, or introduced in stages.


Purpose: Establish leadership direction for how ALIGN will be used.

LEARN

Staff Training

Development Staff · Half Day 

  

Practical, applied training in using Assess, Listen, Integrate, Guide, and Nurture within the organization's development work.

Training is tailored to the agency's development process and the way leadership has chosen to use ALIGN.


Purpose: Prepare staff to apply ALIGN consistently in their work.

Revitalized Communities provides additional capacity as staff applies ALIGN to active development initiatives.

Support may include facilitation, strategic guidance, stakeholder interviews, development integration, Community Partnership Agreement development, or assistance at selected ALIGN stages.


Purpose: Provide expertise where it adds value while agency staff retains ownership of the process.

NURTURE

From Community Participation to Community Stewardship

 

Delivered through Community Prosperity Institute


Community involvement shouldn't end when development decisions are made.

The Nurture stage of ALIGN builds the capacity of community members and organizations to become meaningful partners in implementation, stewardship, and longer-term community prosperity.


Through Community Prosperity Institute (CPI), communities gain the knowledge, organizational capacity, and tools to help carry commitments and benefits forward as intensive agency and consultant involvement decreases.


Community Education & Leadership

Build understanding of development, community benefits, partnership roles, and opportunities for meaningful participation. 

Stewardship Readiness

Strengthen the capacity of organized community partners to participate in implementation and help steward commitments, resources, and benefits. 

Community Prosperity Strategies

Connect development benefits with longer-term opportunities for community wealth building, shared ownership, entrepreneurship, and other locally appropriate prosperity strategies.

The goal is not simply greater participation. It is greater community capacity to help steward what development creates.

SAMPLE OF PREVIOUS PROJECTS / EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE WORK

 Kansas State Technical Assistance to Brownfields (KSUTAB)- provided technical assistance to cities through the Midwest regarding brownfield redevelopment. 

 Evanston, IL- Environmental Equity Investigation- Investigated conditions and policies that affected imbalance in Environmental Justice areas of city. Gave policy change recommendations and mitigation plans. 

 South Bend, IN-Ward Bakery- Led design charettes and adaptive reuse sessions to determine highest and best use for a historic manufacturing building used as a large bakery. 

 Evanston/Chicago, IL-Howard Street Economic Development-- Real Estate analysis for economic development plan along major thoroughfare that supports two cities
